Asbestos analysiswith a SEM electron microscope
Onelab analyses asbestos samples to the ISO 22262-1 standard using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and real-time elemental analysis (LIVE-EDS). This reliably identifies all six types of asbestos. Results emailed on the day the sample arrives.
Short answer
What does an asbestos analysis tell you?
An asbestos analysis tells you whether the building material contains asbestos, and which type was found in the sample. Onelab's JEOL SEM-EDS analysis costs €39.90 + VAT per sample, and the result is delivered on the day the sample arrives.
Analysis method
How does the JEOL SEM‑EDS asbestos analysis work?
Scanning electron microscope (SEM)
The SEM produces an extremely precise image of the sample surface using a focused electron beam. It reveals even the small asbestos fibres that light microscopes cannot detect. Magnification reaches up to 100,000 times, so individual fibres can be examined.
Energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS)
EDS measures the chemical composition of the fibres in real time. Each fibre’s elemental profile is compared with the known asbestos minerals, so the identification is unambiguous. LIVE-EDS makes that comparison instantly, with no delay.
LIVE-MAP - elemental mapping
For complex samples we use LIVE-MAP elemental mapping, which produces a visual map of how the elements are distributed across the sample. It helps tell asbestos fibres from other mineral fibres in particularly difficult cases.

SEM analysis vs. light microscopy (PLM)
| Feature | Light microscopy (PLM) | JEOL SEM-EDS (Onelab) |
|---|---|---|
| Identifiable types of asbestos | 3-4 types | All 6 types |
| Elemental analysis | Not possible | LIVE-EDS in real time |
| Small fibres (< 1 μm) | Does not detect | Identifies them reliably |
| Magnification | approx. 400x | Up to 100,000x |
| Accuracy | Good | Excellent |
| False negatives | Possible | Minimal risk |
| ISO standard | Varies | ISO 22262-1 |
Pricing
Asbestos analysis €39.90 + VAT per sample
Onelab's asbestos analysis is the most affordable in Finland. The price covers a full JEOL SEM-EDS analysis, identification of all asbestos types and a result report by email. No hidden costs, no extra fees. The rate is a flat €39.90 + VAT per sample up to 100 samples; for larger projects the price is negotiable.
