Step by step
This is how you send an asbestos sample
Detach a small piece (about 2–3 cm) of the material to be examined.
Place the sample in a Minigrip bag or other tight plastic bag. Close the bag carefully. Pack each sample in its own bag if you are sending multiple samples.
Write the material and the location on the sample bag. Clear labelling keeps several samples apart.
Write "OneLab / Innosus Oy" as the recipient, then mail the envelope or small parcel to the laboratory. You can use standard letter mail or a parcel.
You can also drop the sample straight into the laboratory letterbox, which is accessible around the clock. Label the sample as instructed.

Tips for packing
Packaging instructions
Correct sample size
The ideal sample size is about 2-3 cm (a piece the size of a matchbox). A sample that is too small can make analysis difficult. On the other hand, a large piece is not needed - a small piece is good enough for JEOL SEM-EDS analysis.
Tight packaging
Use a resealable plastic bag (Minigrip or similar). Make sure the bag is tightly closed. If possible, use a double bag especially with friable material.
Several samples
Pack each sample in its own bag. Clearly mark where each sample was taken. The samples can be sent in the same envelope as long as they are in separate bags.
Postal delivery
The asbestos sample can be sent as a regular letter or as a small package. A padded envelope is sufficient for small samples. Larger samples should be packed in a bubble bag or a small package.
Avoid mistakes
The most common mistakes when sending a sample
Sample without markings
Always mark the sample material and location on the bag. Without markings, we cannot tell which material the sample represents.
Sample too small
Make sure the sample is at least 1-2 cm in size. A very small crumb or dust particle may not be enough for a reliable analysis.
Open or broken packaging
Close the plastic bag carefully. An open bag can release fibres, which is unsafe and can contaminate other samples.
Several samples in the same bag
Pack each sample in its own bag. If different materials share a bag, their results cannot be told apart.
