Where to take the sample in a Helsinki property
The building stock of Helsinki divides roughly in two: the 1920s-1960s masonry buildings of the inner city and the 1960s-1980s prefabricated blocks of the suburbs. In the inner city asbestos is found in pipe insulation, window putty and wall filler, in the suburbs in floor adhesives, vinyl flooring and bathroom waterproofing membranes. Take the sample through the full thickness of the structure so that the adhesive layer comes with it - the surface material alone tells you nothing about the bond underneath.
How large does the sample need to be
An adequate sample is roughly 1-2 centimetres across - a piece the size of a thumbnail is more than enough. A larger piece does not improve the result, while a sample consisting only of dust may prove impossible to analyse. Take an intact piece rather than crumbs.
