How the sample is examined at the laboratory

At our laboratory in Espoo every sample is examined with a JEOL SEM-EDS electron microscope. The instrument combines an electron microscope with elemental analysis, so it identifies fibres on the basis of their actual elemental composition and separates anthophyllite from chrysotile, for instance. The examination is carried out in accordance with the ISO 22262-1 standard. A sample arriving from Kuopio is logged and analysed as a rule on the day it reaches us.

What the result means for the renovation

The answer states whether asbestos was found in the sample and which type of asbestos it is. A positive result means the material must be removed as asbestos removal work by an authorised contractor - this applies to detached houses in Northern Savonia as well. A negative result gives documented certainty that can be attached to the renovation paperwork. The binding limit value of 0.01 fibres/cm³ has applied to all asbestos work since 21 December 2025, which underlines the importance of a documented result.
